What is Medicare?

Medicare qualification

Medicare is health care coverage provided by the federal government and run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for:

  • Persons 65 and over
  • Persons under 65 receiving Social Security Disability for a specific time
  • Persons with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A helps pay for the care you receive after being admitted into a hospital by a physician, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, some hospice and home health care as long as a physician certifies that it is necessary.

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B helps pay for certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.

Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C or Medicare Advantage are offered by private insurance companies. You still enroll in Part A and Part B through the federal government, but then you will want to talk a licensed agent like the ones at Lily Insurance to enroll in a Part C plan. You will get your Part A and Part B benefits through your Medicare Advantage plan. Most plans also include Part D prescription drug coverage, as well as other benefits such as dental, vision, hearing and fitness.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. You can enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan or get this coverage as part of a Medicare Advantage plan. Each plan has a drug formulary. You can talk to a licensed agent at Lily Insurance to see which plan covers your prescriptions.

Medicare Coverage Options

Original Medicare

If you have Medicare Parts A & B this is also known as Original Medicare. After a deductible is paid you are responsible for a percentage of any remaining costs. This does NOT include prescription drugs.

Prescription Drug Coverage

This is Medicare Part D that can you can get from private companies as a standalone plan or part of a Medicare Advantage Plan.

Medicare Supplement

Also called Medigap helps cover out of pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare. These plans are offered by private insurance companies.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans or Medicare Part C are offered by private insurance companies and allow you to get your Part A, Part B and Part D coverage all in one plan.
