ACA EXPLAINED SIMPLE:

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), enacted in 2010, aims to increase access to affordable health insurance. It includes several important features:

  • Health Insurance Marketplaces: Individuals and small businesses can buy insurance through newly established exchanges.
  • Premium Tax Credit: Households earning between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level (FPL) may receive tax credits to reduce their insurance premiums.
  • Medicaid Expansion: Medicaid eligibility was broadened to include all adults with incomes up to 138% of the FPL.
  • Patient Protections: Patients gain more control over their healthcare, and insurers are prohibited from denying coverage or canceling policies due to pre-existing conditions.
  • Essential Health Benefits: Insurance plans are required to cover essential services such as preventive care, rehabilitation, prescription medications, wellness visits, contraceptives, and mental health treatment.
  • Transparency and Competition: New initiatives have been implemented to enhance transparency and foster competition in the healthcare system.
